Wednesday Week

The other day, I noticed on Twitter that this series of posts had come up:

I was also a big fan of  the 2009 DC broadsheet anthology and it reminded me of my own imaginary version, posted four years ago:

I began thinking today how I might tweak my dream version; I need 15 one- page strips, so I looked back at the original post and  gave some thought to DC properties that have made an impact in mainstream media. I also thought about the YA fiction popular with pupils in my school. Let me know what you think of  my ideas!

Batman: last time, I thought the Gothic Romance genre was best served by I, Vampire. I've had a rethink- again along Dark Shadows lines; how about Bruce Wayne in "Forbidden Bride of Gothos Mansion"? By Brendan Fletcher and Becky Cloonan.

Superman & Superboy: I liked the idea of a screwball office comedy at the Daily Planet, drawn by Tim Sale- a real His Girl Friday period piece. But I also think the young Clark Kent would be an interesting protagonist for a Robert Muchamore-Cherub- inspired black ops series, set in the future with junior Kryptonian spy, Dev-Em! Drawn by Mike Collins.

I still like the idea of a 1940s Wonder Woman  adventure with a Kirbyesque spin, ideally by George Perez and guest-starring the Boy Commandos ( this is an Imaginary Tale, after all...)

A hi-tech political thriller starring  Green Arrow, drawn by Mike Grell. In the vein of the old Horak James Bond strips.

 It would be silly to ignore the influence of Game of Thrones so I think there should be a High Fantasy serial with plenty of knavish plotting, assassination and siege engines. The Warlord and Shining Knight seemed a bit obvious and although I love those Kubert Viking Prince stories, how about Sword of the Atom?

 
I would like to see a noir-ish detective story but with a surreal edge, so I want Matt Wagner and Mike Allred producing The Odd Man.

I'm really enjoying catching up with The Flash on Sky at the moment-I missed most of it the first time round. As a sci-fi adventure in a Real World setting with a Millienial coffee- culture cast, I think it would be a good tent-peg for WCII and I'd like Bryan Hitch to draw it. This would be the second "world outside your window" serial in the broadsheet, after GA.

Hex: dystopian stories haven't lost their momentum with the YA readership and with the Mad Max remake, this one seems obvious to me. I want Simonson on pencils!

Teen Titans Go: a humour strip by Baltazar and Franco, in the style of Superman Family Adventures.

 Zatanna: I'd like to downplay  Harry Potter/ magickal war tropes in this serial and do something akin to UK girls' comic Misty: supernatural scare-stories in a recognisable world. The team namechecked above seems absolutely dandy. ( no pun intended!)

Batgirl & Harley Quinn: while I want Zatanna's adventures to look more realistic, this pair seem to lend themselves to a more cartoony approach. I'd go to someone like James Fry III. It might even be a strip that was just visual gags and no dialogue at all...

Green Lantern Corps: I find Hal Jordan a very dull character but the design of the GL uniform is so clever and stylish. I'd like an ST:TOS-inspired sci-fi series, perhaps by Dan McDaid, spotlighting the most bizarre members of the Corps. There might also be a fan competition to design a new alien GL.

Vigilante: I am really enjoying The Wild, Wild West on the Horror Channel- it's a series that I don't think was ever shown on Scottish Television ( or STV). I was very tempted to go with El Diablo or even Cinnamon for a Western strip but how about a 19th-century Vig, tricked out with all sorts of Bond-style gadgets? I'd like Darwyn Cooke to draw it.

I like Martin's idea of a full-page illustration of some kind, so my final strip is Cain's Games Room  from House of Mystery. I'd like a macabre board game or puzzle every week; as a kid, I actually cut out the holes in the original comic, above!
